WHAT IS DENTAL SENSITIVITY?

Dental sensitivity, also known as dentin hypersensitivity, occurs when the dentin (the inner layer of the tooth) becomes exposed. Dentin is covered by enamel on the teeth and cementum on the roots. When the enamel wears down or the gums recede, the dentin becomes exposed, allowing external stimuli such as heat, cold, acidic foods, and touch to reach the nerves inside the tooth, causing pain.

Common Causes of Dental Sensitivity

  1. Abrasive Brushing: Brushing too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush can wear down the enamel and expose the dentin.

  2. Gum Recession: Gum recession can expose the root of the tooth, which is not protected by enamel, resulting in sensitivity.

  3. Bruxism: The habit of grinding teeth can wear down the enamel and expose the dentin.

  4. Periodontal Disease: Gum diseases can cause gum recession and bone loss around the tooth, exposing the dentin.

  5. Acidic Foods and Beverages: Frequent consumption of acidic foods and beverages can erode the enamel.

  6. Dental Treatments: Some dental procedures like cleanings, whitening, or restorations can cause temporary sensitivity.

Prevention of Dental Sensitivity

Proper Oral Hygiene: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a gentle brushing technique to avoid enamel wear. Daily flossing is also crucial for keeping the gums healthy.

Balanced Diet: Avoid excessive consumption of acidic foods and beverages. If you consume something acidic, rinse your mouth with water to neutralize the acids.

Protection Against Bruxism: If you grind your teeth, consult your dentist about using a mouth guard to protect your teeth.

Care with Dental Treatments: Inform your dentist about any sensitivity you experience after a dental treatment. They can adjust their techniques or recommend specific products to minimize sensitivity.
